“Close To Me” is the first tune by Sabrepulse to land on BLEEPSTREET. It’s the first track in a series of singles we plan to release during the next seasons and it showcases the chip-dance hybrid sound he has been experimenting with in his live gigs through the past year.

Chime Super Deluxe & Competition!

Earlier this year myself and songwriter Jorden Milnes co-wrote 'Play With You', a pop/dance track which features in it's own level on the videogame Chime Super Deluxe (IGN editors choice - review here) which is now available on the Playstation Network.

The game is a brilliant puzzler fused with a music engine that reacts to how you play, sort of like a cross between tetris and a sampler!

My top 5 LSDJ tips

One of the problems beginners to LSDJ face is the relatively steep learning curve, especially if you’ve never used tracker-style audio software before. However, it levels out once you put a little time and effort into learning tricks. Here are 5 I couldn’t live without:

1) Cloning - (Select + B then A) I think this is the most powerful user-feature in LSDJ. Cloning essentially takes a chain or phrase you have previously created and creates an identical copy under a different number. This speeds up your workflow exponentially as you don’t have to keep re-creating sections to edit or pasting or manually copying each section. Learn & use it!

2) Cut n’ Pasting - (Select + B / Select + A) Cloning is excellent but copypasta is still an imperative tool for speeding up workflow and can also provide interesting arrangement opportunities. Try experimenting by copying an ‘out of time’ amount of notes in a phrase - say 02 to 0C – then paste + repeat for unusual melodic possibilities.

3) Stereo Separation – This is basically the transition from writing music in ‘2D’ to ‘3D’. Stereo is an intense subject to get into, so i’ll give you a quick practical example of something that can spice up any track. A neat trick to make channels jump out and add width to your music is to ‘quick pan’ using tables. Set a table up on an instrument (let’s say a WAV channel bassline), put three O commands on the top three spots of the command columns, 00 should be L, 01 should be R and 02 should be LR. This quickly pans the channel left and right (or switch to right and left / automate them both) and instantly adds stereo width. Play around with different combinations of this to add different degrees of stereo depth, it’s all about experimentation.

4) Using Groove Effectively – Probably the most underused feature for newbies, it’s worth investing a little time into the workings groove as it’s what separates great users from ones who are content writing everything in the same style (i’ve been guilty of this in the past!). The best tip I was given about groove is everything needs to add to 12 to avoid sync and bpm issues.The default is 6/6, 7/5 is your basic shuffle/swing and in-between that you can add other grooves to spice things up further. Give it a go and try to break out of the mould of writing straightforward/characterless tunes!

5) Draw your waves! – Do you find yourself blindly tweaking parameters in the wave instrument screen until you’ve got a vaguely cool sounding instrument? Wave drawing is a huge part of making your instruments unique. Anytime you create a wave instrument you should nip into the wave drawing/editing screen to play around, even if you think the sound you’re currently getting is great. After a while you’ll start to visually understand how to draw waveforms, what sound each shape creates, and how many variations there can be. Now I always start my wave instruments off by drawing the wave, THEN fine tweaking using the instrument screen parameters.

As you use LSDJ more, these things should become second nature. My final ‘tip’ would be to always keep a copy of the manual available, especially useful for learning the shortcuts. I printed a copy out during the learning process and it’s been something i’ve gone back to time and time again for reference, you should do the same!

Blip Festival Tokyo is the first iteration of the biggest and best chipmusic event to take place on Japanese soil.
It’s happening on September 4^th and 5^th, and an extended line-up (with more to come) has been announced on the website

I’m really hyped for seeing Japanese guys like Quarta330, Hip Tanaka and Saitone who rarely appear in the west – roll on September!

I've collaborated with videogame designer Zach Gage on an iPhone/iPod touch shooter called 'Bit Pilot'.

Creating an ableton/LSDJ live set

Following with the ableton/lsdj theme, here's an excellent article by Marc Nostromo which explains how to set up an lsdj/ableton live set by manually copying your lsdj song structure over to live (he's referencing piggytracker but it's the same idea).

It's a painstaking process in recording each chain as a clip, but the possibiliies are endless once done - i've spent this weekend doing it with a few of my newer tracks, and after some advice from covox I think my new live set is going to rock!

LittleSoundDJ a very popular music tool for the nintendo gameboy, i've used it for several years to create full songs and samples.

This tutorial is a repost from a few years ago, it's very basic but does the job. People have even told me it's really helped them, even some of my favourite new artists!

I always planned on adding photos and updating with advanced techniques, one of these days it might happen. What i'd love to do is take people through the process of writing an entire song using the program, from purchasing the rom and putting it onto a cart (it's a lot easier now than when I started), to getting the best recording possible - Start to finish.

That sort of 'hand-holding' would be frowned upon by many in the chip community, but if it means ushering a new generation of musicians willing to spend time with this music, and in turn creating great new tunes for me to listen to (very selfish I know..) - it's a good thing.

Gigging in 2009 started with a few DJ sets where I was living (Aberdeen), then in april Fighter X & CrunchyCo flew me over to play at the Folklife Festival alongside Trash80 and others - unfortunately my photos are came out horribly, here's some others:

We played shows + parties in Seattle and Olympia, I met some awesome people and had an excellent time, if a little short-lived!

Next up was a little weekend break in may to Kiev, Ukraine for a very heavy breakcore/gabba event called 'The Most' which was held in a skatepark next to a river under a massive bridge/motorway. It had a fake beach and was a bit surreal, but a lot of people were there and it gave me chance to flex some of the heavier stuff i've done over the years - they loved the chip stuff too! Big shout to french breakcore artist Krumble who I met and got very drunk with - good times!

During june and july, aside from wearing that mishka tshirt all the time - I performed in belgium 3 times - once in Ghent, in Brussels and my favourite of all, Rock Herk festival:

I realise i'm banging on about this a bit at the moment, but time is of the essence!

Datapop is going to be one of the parties we play on the USA tour next month, and they're looking to make it a chip/8bit party haven by inviting tons of international artists - but obviously something of this magnitude needs funding, which is where the fans can step in!

There are TONS of awesome people playing already, but they're trying to raise enough cash to bring over artists from Japan, Sweden, France and Canada and make this thing blow up!

(my personal wish-list is USK/XINON/HALLY/SAITONE/COVOX/RANDOM/WIKLUND/SIDABITBALL)...

There are a ton bonuses for helping out, (if you're going anyway a few bucks would get you music + vip access to the show!) and i've given 20 sabrepulse tshirts, an lsdj cart and one of my gameboys (we'll get all artists to sign it) as extra incentives.

I realise there are much better causes in the world for donations, but if you're going to sxsw and you love chipmusic, get involved!

Lot's of exciting things are happening in the world of Sabrepulse in the next few months!

Some of you may remember I moved down to (just outside) London late last year, since then i've found a new job, wrote a lot of new music and played some excellent shows.

I've done some networking in music-industry circles and all going well, it could turn into something larger that I expected. More news on that this year i'm sure - but a positive outcome from it has already appeared in getting my own night at the O2 Academy, Islington, one of the best known live venues in the city.

As far as I know, BEEP (click that link to buy tickets!) will be the first ever regular event to incorporate chiptune in the capital - and over the course of the year I have big plans for showcasing international chip musicians and integrating it with the Alliance tour.

New Tshirts are currently being printed & should be available at my bigcartel store next week (it was due to be this week but there's an issue with shirt stock) - the mockup looks great!

Release-wise - I'm planning on releasing the new full length at some point this year, plus a split ep with australian genius cTrix , and i'm currently putting the final touches to the soundtrack to an iphone/ipod touch game which will be released separately.

So there you go, lots to see, hear and do!

I've been a very busy bunny of late - had two truly excellent shows in London (Camden Barfly w/Unicorn Kid) which sold out and in Nottingham for the Games City Live event featuring a tracker workshop from Syphus and I, then performances together and alongside Free Market Economy and some rather odd/hilarious videogame poetry!

Inbetween all that i've had a meeting with a major label, went as a rabid zombie to a halloween party, networked with some really influencial (and lovely!) people within the gaming industry, partied and spent lots of time in london, and have been writing a lot of new material.

At the end of this month i'll be travelling to sunny Rio de Janeiro with henry homesweet to perform at the Hipersonica 2009 festial alongside chip superstars such as Bit Shifter & Covox - which is all a bit random and quite exciting!!!!!

Just a quick note to people who've yet to recieve their tshirt orders - i've got 5 remaining shirts to send here and they're being posted today, please let me know if you don't recieve anything by the end of the week if you're overseas.

Another bit of good news (and something that followers of my blog might already know :p) is that a new sabrepulse album is in the works and finally starting to take shape, i'm aiming for an early 2010 release, with preview tracks being available on myspace in the coming months. The album will be available to download for a small fee, or as a full priced CD to purchase containing artwork and bonus materials. More details when I have them!

My final two gigs of 2009 are taking place next week - the first is wednesday 28th at the camden barfly, london - playing with Unicorn Kid as part of the roundhouse/bbc emerging proms - and the second is friday 30th at Gamecity Squared in Nottingham where i'll be running a one-hour workshop on gameboy/chiptune music in the afternoon then performing live during the evening.

End Of An Era

So much has happened in the past week I could take up an entire page talking about it! Bottom line is i'm saying goodbye to scotland today and relocating down south - i've had some great times and i'll miss people here, but it's time to move on.

In a way it's great things have turned out the way they have - i'll have a bit more spare time in the run upto xmas to get some new music out!

It's pouring again

Due to my flatmate having his missus move in, i'm on the lookout for a new place to live again - which i'll admit wasn't part of the plan or something I need right now, but that's how it goes! Life deals you a bad hand sometime and you just have to lump it.

I'm at a turning point with regards to where I want to be. On one hand my job (and subsequent financial security) lies in Aberdeen, on the other I could move down to London to be closer to my family and civilisation in general. Another option looms over the horizon but i've got some time yet to decide if it's the direction I want to aim for.

Could be better, could be (and I need to keep reminding myself it has been in recent years) a lot worse.

As with everything CTA Tour this year, it's a little last minute - so the deadline is by the end of next week (Friday 11th September) in order for me to get them all printed.

Japan was absolutely incredible - and i've fallen madly in love with Tokyo more than any city before.

I'll get around to doing a final photo dump and also put some of the better videos up, some context for those of you that have no idea what's going on in the pics would help too!

While I was out there I managed to snag that elusive Akai APC40 ableton controller at almost a third off it's uk price, so the final (for now) piece of my studio puzzle is complete.

The next few weeks is the build-up to the Chiptune Alliance Tour 2009, so from somewhere I have to pull the motivation to tie up all the bookings, create posters, drum up hype and generally be a promotion wizard. Plus finish new songs, do a radio 1 interview/live session and bemoan the grim weather that wraps aberdeen.

But for now, i'll sleep.

British Summertime

Last weekend was the laziest i've had in a while - great to catch up on a lack of sleep from working and recent gigging, but the contstant rain - and bellowing thunder as i'm writing this - leave me wondering why I choose to live in such a grim summer climate.

Out with the doom and gloom, things of note are a new Macbook Pro 13", which instantly makes every other laptop i've had seem a bit fisher-price, and a korg nanokontrol for an outboard knobbox solution to the alesis keyboard i'm currently using live.

I'll put up a selection of the rock herk festival photos up at some point, it was an amazing show - one of the best i've ever played with a huge crowd who were really up for it, a massive thanks to maarten and all the guys involved with it's organisation!

The Japan tour is coming up next month, and i'm so stoked to be playing alonside legends like Hally, YMCK, USK, Maru & Xinon - it'll also be nice to spend some time in a warmer climate ;)

I stole a toy car (bright yellow AA van) from asda when I was about 4 or 5. Of course I didn't realise at the time it was theft, it just seemed quite appealing so I took it out of the box and put it in my pocket. My mother went ballistic when she found it, she drove us all the way back and handed it back to the manager to teach me right from wrong. Quite right!

Unlike afrikan boi, I do go back to asda quite often - mostly for their cheese & chutney sarnies, yum!

Rock Herk Festival 2009

I'm playing the second stage at Rock Herk this friday evening (20:00), which is kinda nerve wracking as it's the first 'real' festival i've been asked to do. It's a FREE festival so if you're in the area you have no reason not to be there :p

Other bands/artists at the festival include The Horrors, Feadz, The Teenagers, Trail Of Dead, Panacea and loads more - blimey!

Joining me for midi/keys backup wil be my good friend Wayne (aka Eric Chiptune) - expect new tracks and mashups of old ones!

I'm also dj'ing a birthday party at Tunnels in aberdeen on saturday night - a rather eventful weekend in total!

The new layout is up over on myspace.com/sabrepulse - i've got extremely limited net access at home (iphone), and there's no firefox at work so i'm going to be unable to sort the content out till this weekend.

There is a new song up, i'm not planning on 'Star Romance' being part of the new record - it's just a nice poppy summer track!

Gig Cancellation!

I've had to pull out of my August 20th date in Manchester at the Ruby Lounge becuase of it overlapping with my Japan trip.

Originally it wasn't going to be a problem as i'd fly out of manchester the night after the show, but the flights have been booked on the day of the 20th, with no way to rebook - so i've had no other option.

I'm sure something will end up being rebooked at a later date, so all is not lost!

I've got Macbook Pro lust again, it comes on every few years and I usually come to my senses and buy something else. Recent issues with the netbook, getting on really well with the iphone and actually having the money for one this time are all giving me reasons to go mac.

The 13" looks pretty perfect for performing/spare time in airports. What to do, hmm?
